Welcome to Rally!
Hello and Welcome! I’m a parent of three kids, including one dyslexic. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about how kids learn to read. My goal with Rally is to offer the app I wish I’d had when my kids started grade school.
What is reading fluency?
We all know what it means to be a fluent speaker, but what does it mean to be a fluent reader? At its most basic level, reading fluency is the ability to read like you speak.
Why reading fluency matters
Reading fluency is the key to comprehension. It allows students to make a connection, or bridge, between word recognition and understanding a text as a whole.
The more you read, the better you get
Reading for 30+ minutes a day is a greater predictor of academic success than social or economic background. “The more that you read, the more things you will know.”
Read to a pet or stuffed animal (a.k.a. the value of stress-free practice)
Kids have a strong natural desire to please. Reading aloud to parents and teachers can cause stress if kids are worried about whether they’re doing a good job.
Our brains were never meant to read
We are hardwired to breathe, eat, think, and even talk. But we were never meant to read. Reading is man’s own invention - a skill that needs to be learned and cultivated, just like any other.
